Where are you from?
I was born in El Paso, Texas (great food, really hot, lots of sand and some mountains to boot) but grew up in Houston (phenomenal food, hot, hurricanes, humid).
What do you do here?
I develop both business relationships and people. It is so very easy in the world of metrics and analytics to forget that people are more complex than a spreadsheet. I try to take the time to understand what makes people tick and help them to achieve greatness. A lot of it comes down to listening and giving people good feedback, direction, and support. I like to remind others that I realize that they exist after they leave the office and actually care about their success both personal and professional.
What do you enjoy most about working at Code Koalas?
The fact that we protect our culture. If you didn’t come in and have a great day then you must have come to the wrong office.
How did you get started in business development?
I got my start in the airline industry and was able to work in just about every single department in the operation. No, I didn’t fly airplanes, you really don’t want me to try… I realized quickly that it’s best to hire for Attitude and train for skills. I also realized that it is very important to have the courage to develop people even if you end up hiring, promoting, and training your future boss. It never ever hurts to help others.
What are some tools you use on a daily basis?
MacBook Pro with dual monitors. Once you starting working with multiple monitors you can never go back. ever. I also use the phone. a lot. (Confession: I usually have to use speaker so that I can take notes… I don’t like it but have lost too many earpieces in my ear.)
If you could do anything else, what would it be?
Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera. I’d probably wear tennis shoes though because standing for 4 hours of Wagner could be brutal.
Favorite thing about Kansas City?
FriendshipsBBQWeather(yes, seriously)GreatPlaceToHaveAFamily (if it’s all one word then I can choose more than one, parenthetical phrases don’t count).
How do you like your coffee?
Exotic coffee with Organic sweetened condensed milk and some Almond Milk, and often.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I saw Richard Margison singing Mephistofele at Houston Grand Opera when I was a kid and knew I wanted to be an opera singer. Life has had some twists and turns for me but I wouldn’t change where I am at right now. I may not be famous, but I have arrived.
What would your superpower be if you could choose one?
Invisibility, then I would train myself to fly.
